I was vaguely aware that a mule had been cloned at the University of Idaho a couple of years ago. It turns out that there are three cloned mules and two of them, Idaho Gem and Idaho Star, are racing each other this weekend in Winnemucca, Nevada. Even though this is an obvious stunt on the part of the mule’s owner, Don Jacklin, to publicize the fledgling sport of mule racing, there is just enough of a “scientific” veneer to make the race intriguing. Each mule is genetically identical to the other, but they have been trained by different trainers, using different training techniques, in different parts of the country. I can’t wait to hear the results. I am betting against a “dead heat”, though.
